The large shapes encourages little hands to have a go at cutting, tracing and assembling the shapes themselves. Arty Crafty Kids will need to use their problem solving skills and imagination to work out where the shapes are best placed.
How to Make a Wriggly Heart Snake Craft:
With its handy template, this is a great craft to try either at home or within the classroom. Preschoolers and children in early years classes may find it easier to glue the snake elements together, it will certainly be quicker within a classroom setting and will encourage children to create independently.
What you need:
Coloured Construction Paper (or Cardstock)
Paper Fasteners ( Also called Split Pins and Brads)
Pencil
Glue Stick
Scissors

Let’s Make a Wriggly Snake:
Cut Out the Heart Snake Elements
Step 1: Our wriggly snake is constructed from three heart shapes:
- A large Heart for the Snakes Head
- A Medium Sized Heart for the Wriggly Body
- A Smaller Narrow Heart Shape for the Tail
Once the elements have been cut out, ask the Arty Crafty Kids to place the hearts into size order.
Fold a Piece of Paper in Half
Step 2: Let’s start with the head ( the largest heart shape).
Fold a piece of coloured paper in half.
Trace the Snake Heart Head Piece
Step 3: Align the straight edge of the heart along the fold.
Trace around the heart with a pencil.
Cut out the Heart Shape – Do Not Cut Along the Fold!
Step 4: Start from the bottom of the heart and carefully cut out the shape.
Do not cut along the fold!
Once the heart has been cut out, it will open up as a card.
Open the Heart as a Card
Step 5: Once the smallest heart has been traced onto coloured paper, glue the white template into the inside of the snake’s head. This will create a space for Arty Crafty Kids to write a message.
Add the Face Elements
Step 6: Secure the eyes and tongue with glue to the large heart. This will complete the snakes head!
Trace and Cut out Multiple Coloured Hearts
Step 7: Using coloured paper, trace around the medium sized heart as many times as desired. These hearts will form the snakes wriggly body.
In our example, we’ve created a rainbow snake.
Kids’ can choose their own colour scheme, create patterns and make their snake as long or short as they like!
Step 8: Once the hearts have been traced and cut out, secure the tail (the smallest heart) to a body piece by piercing a hole in the top of the tail and another in the bottom of the body piece. Join the two with a paper fastener and secure.
Join the Hearts to Create a Wriggly Body
Step 9: Repeat the process of step 8 until all the body pieces are connected.
Complete the Wriggly Heart Snake Craft
Step 10: Complete the wriggly heart snake craft by gluing the head to the final body piece.
Now it’s time to wriggle wriggle!
