Step-by-Step Paper Roll Sunflower Tutorial:

Image features a hand holding up a painted green paper roll.

Step 1: Paint the paper roll.

Use acrylic paint to color the paper roll green and let it dry. Depending on the quality of the paint and the water-to-paint ratios, the paper may require several coats to achieve a solid green color.

Alternatively, wrap the paper roll in green paper.

Step 2: Paint the sunflower petals.

Since we love adding an artistic touch to our crafts, we’ve chosen to use the scrape painting technique to color our petals. This step is optional—if you’re crafting with younger children, they might find it easier to color the petals with crayons or trace them onto yellow and orange cardstock.

To try the scrape painting technique, start by simply apply a few spots of yellow, orange, and red paint onto one of the petals.

Next, use a scraping tool such as a piece of card stock, a popsicle stick, or an old bank card to spread the paint across the petals.

The few spots of paint added at the beginning should cover at least half of the petals if not all.

Keep spreading the paint until all the petals are fully colored, adding more paint as needed. The scrape painting method not only creates a beautiful blend of colors but also captures the natural variations found in real sunflower petals.

Step 3: Cut out the sunflower pieces from the template.

Trace the circular piece onto light brown cardstock, the petals onto green cardstock, and carefully cut out the petals, eyes, and small cheeks.

Step 5: Affix the sunflower petals to the brown center piece.

Apply a layer of glue around the circular edge, then start attaching the petals.

You can overlap the petals slightly or place them side by side — either arrangement works well, as the sunflower is designed to accommodate up to 12 petals.

Step 6: Add a cute face to the sunflower’s middle (disk flower).

Attach the eyes and colored cheeks to the sunflower’s brown center, then use a black marker to draw a cute smile.

Step 7: Glue the sunflower onto the paper roll.

Apply a thick layer of glue to the back of the sunflower head and affix it to the top of the paper roll.

Step 8: Draw simple veins onto the leaves.

Use a black marker pen to draw some lines (veins) onto each leaf.
