Let’s Make Jack-O-Lanterns!

Our pumpkins are painted using the scrape painting technique, which is a super fun and easy way to fill a large area with vibrant colors and create interesting texture.

The Scrape Painting Technique

As the name suggests, it is the art of scaping paint across a canvas. Scrape painting is such a fun and effective technique for blending colors and creating cool textures.

All you need is paint, ideally acrylic paint and scraps of card/cardboard or an old bank card. Essentially the “scraper” needs to be sturdy with a flat edge. It needs to be easy for little hands to hold and manoeuvre, and strong enough to be scraped across a canvas – in this example, a piece of scrap card stock.

Step 1: Apply Paint Directly onto the Pumpkin

Step 1: Apply Paint Directly onto the Pumpkin

Select 3 or 4 different colors and apply them in little blots directly to the top of the pumpkin.

Step 2: Create a Paint Scraper

Step 2: Create a Paint Scraper

Use a piece of scrap card stock to create a “scraper”, ensuring that at least one edge is straight.

Step 3: Scrape the Paint Across the Pumpkin

Step 3: Scrape the Paint Across the Pumpkin

Position the scraper behind the blots of paint ( the more the merrier!) and scrape in a downwards motion.

Step 4: Continue Scraping Paint Until the Pumpkin is Covered

Step 4: Continue Scraping Paint Until the Pumpkin is Covered

Continue scraping the paint across the pumpkin template until it is full with color.

Step 5: Color in the Stalk

Step 5: Color in the Stalk

Use a marker pen to color in the stalk.

Step 6: Cut out the Pumpkins

Step 6: Cut out the Pumpkins

Once all the pumpkin shapes are dry, carefully cut them out.

Option: Glue the pumpkins to a piece of black or dark blue card stock and cut around the shape of the pumpkin to create a border.

The contrast helps to define the pumpkin shape and encourages the colors to pop. The additional card stock also reinforces the art and makes it easier for the completed Jack-O-Lanterns to be put on display.

Step 7: Cut Out the Jack-O-Lantern Faces

Step 7: Cut Out the Jack-O-Lantern Faces

Cut out the Jack-O-Lantern face elements.

Step 8: Create a Fun Pumpkin Face

Step 8: Create a Fun Pumpkin Face

Affix a mouth, nose and eye pieces to each pumpkin to create a Jack-O-Lantern.

Step 9: Mix and Match the Jack-O-Lantern Faces

Step 9: Mix and Match the Jack-O-Lantern Faces

Have fun with the faces and create different expressions.
