Let’s Make a Frog on a Lily Pad!
Step 1: Creatively Color in Printable Frog Template.
Use a favorite medium (or exploring something new), whether that’s crayons, pencils, marker pens or even paint, to complete the frog.
Kids can opt for traditional colors for their frogs or take inspiration from the amazing variety of frog species found around the world in the wild.
Here’s a list of colorful frogs for children to research:
- Red-eyed tree frog (Agalychnis callidryas) – bright green body with blue and yellow markings, and of course, striking red eyes.
- Blue poison dart frog (Dendrobates tinctorius azureus) – bright blue body with black spots, found in the rainforests of South America.
- Strawberry poison dart frog (Oophaga pumilio) – bright red body with blue or black legs, found in Central America.
- Golden poison dart frog (Phyllobates terribilis) – bright yellow body with black spots, known for being one of the most toxic animals on earth.
- Green and black poison dart frog (Dendrobates auratus) – green body with black markings, found in Central and South America.
Step 2: Cut out the Frog element.
Our frog printable is divided into two key parts; the lily pad and frog body/legs.
Put the lily pad to one side.
Carefully cut along the dotted lines of the body element to divide it into 3 parts: a wide frog body in the middle with two spotty legs either side.
Step 3: Turn the Frogs Body and Leg element over and fold the joining flap.
Step 4: Apply a generous spread of glue along the fold.
Step 5: Turn the frog element over and affix the fold to the top of the lily pad.
Step 6: Take the middle section of the frog element and roll it over to the front of the lily pad – apply a generous spread of glue to the frogs feet and affix to the lily pad.
From a side view, the frog’s body should appear like a big arch; creating an amazing 3D effect that enhances the round shape of the frog.
Step 7: Roll one of the frog legs over to form an arch and affix to the front of the lily pad.
To help separate the appearance of the frog’s body from the legs, try glueing the foot at a slight angle away from its body.
Step 8: Roll the second frog leg from the back to the front of the lily pad and affix.
To micro the first leg, affix the second frog leg at an angle.
Step 9: Apply a generous spread of glue to the bottom of the frogs head and attach it to the frogs body.
The printable frog template also features optional eyebrows that will add a ‘cartoon’ feel to the craft – perfect if your Arty Crafty Kids are aiming for a ‘Kermit the Frog’ styled character.
The frog craft is now complete!
I hope your Arty Crafty Kids have enjoyed using their creativity to color and make our frogs on a lily pad.
By the end of this tutorial, they would have learnt how to use simple 3D effects to enhance their craft and bring their colorful frogs to life.
