Let’s Make a Christmas Tree Bauble!
Painting with the Scrape Painting Technique
The Scrape Painting Technique
As the name suggests, it is the art of scaping paint across a canvas. Scrape painting is such a fun and effective technique for blending colors and creating cool textures.
All you need is paint, ideally acrylic paint and scraps of card/cardboard or anold bank card. Essentially the “scraper” needs to be sturdy with a flat edge. It needs to be easy for little hands to hold and manoeuvre, and strong enough to be scraped across a canvas – in this example, a sheet of white card stock.
How to Begin Scrape Painting
Start by applying small squirts of paint directly to Christmas Tree Template.
As you can see from our example, we’ve positioned the dollops of paint next to each. We intend to collect all the paint in one go!
Let’s scrape!
Once the paint is in position, take the scraper tool and gently spread the paint in a downwards motion to fill the mini Christmas trees’.
For another example of the scrap painting technique in action, take a look at our Underwater Shark Art.
Remove the Excess Paint
Once the Arty Crafty Kids have finished scraping, remove the excess paint from the bottom of the template by scraping the paint into a bowl.
Fold Each Christmas Tree in Half
Once the Christmas tree template has completely dried, cut out the trees and carefully fold each in half.
Try not be too precious about having the tree branches perfectly aligned. The cutting results will vary from child to child and any excess over-lap can be trimmed off at the end.
Layer the Christmas Tree Halves
Next, apply a generous spread of glue across one half of the Christmas tree and place another piece on top.
Adjust the Christmas Trees with Each New Layer
As the Christmas tree layers build up, spend a few seconds with each new Christmas tree to align the points.
Again, don’t worry if it’s not perfect, the Christmas trees’ can be pruned at the end.
Cut a Piece of String and Create a Hanging Loop
Next, cut a piece of string that’s approximately 2 or 3 inches longer either side of the ornament.
Create a hanging loop on one end and secure with a knot.
Decorate the String with Beads
Decorate the string with a few wooden beads.
Align the String within the Christmas Tree
Unfold the Christmas tree and lay it flat on the table top.
Place the string along the paper fold line and apply lots of glue to the both sides of the Christmas tree.
Unfold the Christmas Tree and Secure the Two Ends
Bring the remaining Christmas tree halves together to complete the 3D effect.
The 3D Christmas Tree Bauble is now Complete!
I hope your Arty Crafty Kids enjoy creating their very own 3D Christmas Tree ornament and if you happen to share their completed baubles on social media, please tag us to show off how what they’ve decorated this Christmas!
