Halloween Spider Web Art: Spiders – they have a bit of a bad rep for being scary and hairy; but let’s not forget, they’re one of natures most artistic builders. So if you’re looking for an easy but expressive craft, inspired by nature, our string spider web art is perfect.
Pre-schoolers and school early years can use the activity to strengthen fine motor skills, and to support several different learning topics like mini-beasts or where animals find homes in Autumn (like the cheeky spiders who come indoors, shudder!).
And if you’re planning for Halloween and thinking about decorations for the classroom or the home, this activity would help to create a wonderfully bright and colorful display, that’s suitable for all ages.
How to Make String Halloween Spider Web Art:
Supplies:
Scrap Cardboard
String
White Cardstock
Sponge
Large Circular Objects
Paint
Scissors
Let’s Make String Art Spider Webs!
Create a Large Circular Cardboard Base
Draw around a dinner plate (don’t use the best china!) onto some thick cardboard and carefully cut it out, so you have a large circle. This won’t be your finished piece; it just helps you to create the design on your web.
Add Threading Slits
Now we need to make 12 slits around the edge of the cardboard circle. They need to be evenly spaced, so to help you, think about a clock face, and make your slits using opposites. So snip at 12 o clock and then 6 o clock; at 3 o clock and 9 o clock and so on, until you have all 12 slits in place.
Thread the String
Cut another circle; this one needs to be a little smaller and from a normal, thin cardstock. Lay it onto the middle of the larger cardboard circle and then it’s time to start threading.
Thinking about our clock face again, each thread needs to travel to its opposite: 12 o clock to 6 o clock; 3 o clock to 9 o clock; 1 o clock to 7 o clock and so on until all the slits have a thread in place.
Try to Align the String to Create a Dominant Center
Ideally, we don’t want the threads to cross over each in multiple places so, if you can, tweak them so they all cross at the center point.
Create the Web Effect
Secure one end of the string, close to the center point, with a knot.
Now we’re going to fill in the spiderweb with its circular strands so we need to weave the string in out of the strands, creating a loop around each one to hold the string in place.
You’ll need to weave over the string, back under and over to the next string, and repeat all the way around the web.
Secure the End
When you’ve filled all of the space, tie off the end of the string so your web doesn’t come undone.
Sponge Painting
Now for the fun and messy part! Using a sponge, dab and dapple colored paint over the web. You could use Halloween colors like purple, orange and blue, or Autumn colors like red, yellow and brown – it’s totally up to you!
When you’ve added your base colors, sponge some black across the strings to create depth and definition in your web.
Cut the String
Once the paint is dry, carefully snip the threaded string.
The Big Reveal
Lift the string slowly up from the centre and ta-dah! Your colorful, patterned spider web is complete! Hang it up, make a spooky display and don’t forget to send us a picture on social media!
