Let’s Prepare the Sleepy Fox Template for Line Art:
Step 1: Draw a series of arches.
Begin just above the nose and draw a series of horizontal arches that span both sides of the bridge. Continue this pattern, gradually working your way up to the top of the forehead.
The spacing between each arch is entirely up to your creative preference—they can be wide, narrow, or a mix of both.
Step 2: Draw vertical lines between the arches.
Within the white space between each arch, draw a series of vertical lines along the curve.
These lines can be tightly packed or more spread out—encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to explore the visual impact of both styles.
The lines can also vary in length or gradually increase to create a sense of depth and perspective, enhancing the shape of the fox’s head.
Step 3: Repeat steps 1 and 2 within the tail segment.
Use a pencil to divide the tail into segments, then fill each section with small lines.
Observe how these rows follow a different direction compared to those on the head.
Step 4: Complete the fox’s ears.
Keep adding lines to the remaining areas of the fox, and engage your students in a discussion about how the repetition of lines creates a fur-like texture.
Continue drawing rows of small lines throughout the fox’s body, leaving the face and paws white to create contrast.
This black-and-white balance enhances the visual impact and draws attention to key features of the fox.
Step 5: Outline the fox with a white crayon.
After finishing the line drawing, outline the fox with a white crayon to prevent the watercolor paint from bleeding into the black-and-white design.
Step 6: Layer watercolor paint.
Dampen the brush and start painting a series of overlapping circles in the surrounding space. This simple watercolor layering technique creates beautiful blends and is an easy, enjoyable activity for kids.
The soft washes of color provide a striking contrast against the black-and-white fox, making the artwork pop.
Encourage your Arty Crafty Kids to experiment with different color palettes to achieve various effects—reds, oranges, and yellows for an autumnal feel; cooler shades like blues and purples to evoke a night sky; or shades of green to suggest a lush forest bed.”
This easy addition to the art project is a wonderful way to introduce children to mixed-media techniques and explore elements of abstract art.
Step 7: Add a little color to the fox’s inner ear and cheek.
Paint the inside of the fox’s ear a light shade of pink and add a pair of cute cheeks.
Step 8: Color in the nose to complete the Simple Fox Line Art Project.
With a colored in nose, the project is complete!
For variation, swap out the lines for simple doodles to add a playful touch, or use different colors to add variety to the fur. Take a look at our Romero Britto Dog Art for inspiration!
