Let’s Make Heart Art!
The Grid Printable Template:
This template can be used in two ways; firstly as a practice sheet to experiment with patterns and colors and secondly, children may design their very own Britto Inspired art, adding hearts or other illustrations that inspire them.
Step 1: Use a pencil to outline hearts and doodles
Romero Britto’s work tends to feature simple patterns and shapes; stripes, dots, lines, squiggles, shapes, flowers etc.
Fill the segments with your own simple pattern/doodle.
As an expansion, draw large hearts across the segments.
Step 2: Color in the segments with felt tip pens or marker pens
Once you’re happy with the pencil lined drawings, begin coloring in the shapes.
Use a selection of brightly colored and vibrant shades; combining closely related colors within a pattern.
Step 3: Get creative with color, Britto style!
Romero Britto often uses analogous colors within his designs, particularly where stripes and dots are featured.
“Analogous” is the term used to describe closely related colors i.e those that are next to each other within the color wheel.
Step 4: Outline the designs with thick black lines
Black border lines are a dominate feature within Britto’s work and are used for definition and to make elements pop.
Once segment parts of the design are colored in, use a thick black marker pen to outline the shapes.
This could be reserved for once the template is colored in or drawn in stages.
Step 5: Use a black marker for doodles
In segments that feature a single block color, try drawing simple doodles on top with a black marker pen.
These lines could be loop-the-loops, arches, straight lines in groups or singular, spots etc.
Take a note of how negative and positive space can be used within the design.
For example, think about how surrounding space around a heart can be used to draw attention to enhance its presence. This could be achieved with contrasting colors – leaving parts of the heart (or surrounding areas) white in amongst bright colors.
The open grid template is a great option for older children; giving them the opportunity to immerse themselves within Britto’s style and create extraordinary pieces of playful art – making the art project entirely their own!
The Printable Heart Grid Template
Romero Britto’s hearts often take an uninformed, unsymmetrical shape that odds a cartoon-like quality to their appearance.
This template is a tribute to Britto’s heart illustrations and has been designed with younger children in mind who can explore color and pattern creation within smaller digestible chunks.
Of course, like all the templates featured within this art project, it can be scaled up or down – it depends entirely on the desired learning outcomes and ages of your Arty Crafty Kids.
The Simple Large Heart Template
This template features a large heart with spacious segments, both inside the heart and out. It’s a great template to use with very young children.
The Hearts within a Heart Template
The hearts within a heart template is perfect for older children who are looking for a challenge. While the segments are prepared, children will need to think about how they use colors and patterns to make each heart pop.
