Key Features of Romero Britto’s Pop Art Style
Our easy dog drawing pop art project, inspired by Romero Britto’s playful pups, focuses on 4 key characteristics of his work: cubism, pop art, and his use of vivid colors and patterns to convey joy and happiness.
- Cubism: Britto’s art is a prime example of how crisp lines and geometric shapes can be used to create a sense of energy and movement in a piece.
- Pop Art: Creates cartoonish visuals, giving them more energy and liveliness. They’re often simplistic and childlike in the form to evoke feelings of happiness.
- Vivid Colors: Romero Britto’s color choices are bright, bold, and full of joy; using many different colors, often in strong combinations. His colors are flat (no shading), usually putting similar colors next to each other, and he uses bold lines to outline shapes.
- Patterns: Romero Britto’s paintings feature bold and eye-catching arrangements of simple geometric shapes such as squares, triangles, circles, and diamonds. Checkerboards, hearts, and flowers are also recurring motifs within his work, adding warmth and familiarity to his use of common images.

Easy Dog Drawing Step-by-Step Tutorial
Step 1: Romero Britto inspired doodle practice.
Use the doodle practice sheet provided to create lines and patterns in the style of Romero Britto.
These could include geometric shapes like circles, squares, triangles, or squiggly and zig-zag lines and objects such as hearts and flowers ( these can be found in most of Romero Britto’s paintings!).
Step 2: Draw the top of the dog’s head and ears.
Begin by sketching in pencil and then tracing with a black marker pen, or if your Arty Crafty Kids are feeling confident, they can start directly with a black marker pen.
To draw the dog’s head, start with a straight line and add a pair of triangular ears.
Step 3: Draw the Dog’s head.
Complete the dog’s head using a series of four interconnected, angular straight lines.
Step 4: Draw the Dog’s collar and the beginnings of its front legs.
From the dog’s chin, draw a flattened oval shape to create the neck. Next, add a circle with a heart-shaped dog tag attached. The heart is a playful tribute to Romero Britto’s frequent use of heart motifs in his artwork.
Draw a straight line extending from the tip of the heart and add two curved lines at the bottom. These will form the beginnings of the dog’s paws, with the straight line serving as a divider for the front legs.
Step 5: Complete the Dog’s front legs.
Use a mix of curved and straight lines to complete the dog’s front legs.
Step 6: Draw a pair of back paws.
Draw two slightly flattened curved lines to create the dog’s hind paws, giving it a charming seated pose.
Step 7: Draw a pair of hind legs.
Next, connect the hind paws to the front legs with large curved lines that extend outward and then curve back in to join the front lines.
Step 8: Draw facial features and a crown.
Draw the facial features, including simple eyes, a triangular nose, and a cheerful smile. Enhance the dog’s charm by adding a playful crown atop its head, giving it a regal and fun appearance.
Step 9: Segment the dog drawing.
Next, use a ruler to divide the background and parts of the dog into smaller, geometrical segments.
Step 10: Fill the segments with doodles and patterns.
Next, use a pencil to draw a collection of patterns within each of the segments.
Color each segment and its patterns with vibrant colors; using a black marker pen to highlight and outline shapes and lines.
Black border lines are a dominant feature within Britto’s work and are used for definition and to make elements pop.
Continue coloring in the dog drawing until it’s bursting with color!
Romero Britto often uses analogous colors within his designs, particularly where stripes and dots are featured.
“Analogous” is the term used to describe closely related colors, i.e., those next to each other within the color wheel.
