Craft into the New Year with our super easy and fun New Years Fireworks Art project for kids!
This mixed media fireworks art project is the perfect way for kids to explore celebrations within art, whether that’s for New Years, Fourth of July or Bonfire Night.
Children will learn how to use scrap pieces of cardboard to create bright, colorful and explosive looking fireworks that capture the moment of a firework display they have attended or seen.
The second part of the project encourages children to doodle and draw houses; playing with shapes and lines to create a “cityscape” for their fireworks display.

Let’s Create Firework Art!
Gather the Scrap Card and Materials
Gather several pieces of scrap card of varying lengths.
Dip an Edge of Card into the Paint
Dip one of the edges directly into the paint.
Print in a Circular Formation
Next, take the painted edge and press the card firmly down onto the black card stock.
From the first print, create a series of additional prints in a circular formation, moving just slightly each time from the central point to create a nice spiky circle.
Layer the Prints to Create a Catherine Wheel / Fireworks Explosion Effect
Once the first layer is complete, use a different color to create a second layer of prints.
Try to use contrasting colors with each new layer to make the fireworks pop from the page!
Fill the Black Space with Colorful Prints
Continue filling the black space with the New Years fireworks.
Print from different directions on the page and even criss-cross the prints to create the impression of multiple fireworks explosions.
Let’s Draw a Cityscape
Next, let’s create a simple cityscape doodle.
Along the horizontal edge of a piece of A4 card stock, draw a number of neighboring rectangles that vary height and width.
The lines can be drawn free hand or with a straight object, such as a popsicle stick or ruler.
Add Detail to the Townhouses
Doodle roofs to the tops of the rectangles. These could be round in shape, triangular or any shape of your Arty Crafty Kids choosing.
Add some detail. This could include brick shapes, doors and windows.
Paint the Cityscape with Watercolors
Use watercolor paint to color the cityscape.
Watercolors create an interesting contrast against the bold colors of the fireworks and add a lovely texture to the houses.
Cut out the Cityscape
Once the cityscape is dry, carefully cut it out.
Glue the Townhouses below the Fireworks
Finally, glue the cityscape just below the fireworks to complete the New Years Fireworks Art Project!
I hope your children have a wonderful time creating their very own celebratory fireworks scene. Perhaps they could attempt drawing their own own house, town or city and if you have younger children, maybe they would prefer printing their fireworks with a paper roll.
