Squeegee Art – How to Create Interesting Paper for Collaging
Squeegee art is a nice way to create interesting textures with bright colors for collaging. It’s super simple and can be used instead of, or with, repurposed scrap paper, patterned paper, and old artwork.
Step 1: Gather supplies.
Start with a piece of cardstock and place a scrap piece of paper underneath to catch any leftover paint.
Pick a mix of bright colors. Don’t be afraid to play around with contrasting shades to create new ones and encourage some creative experimentation.
Step 2: Add the small blobs of paint.
Start by placing small blobs of acrylic paint on a piece of white card stock.
Choose a mix of complementary and vibrant colors. Consider using bright blues, yellows, pinks, and greens.
Step 3: Scrape the paint.
Using your squeegee, drag the paint across the page in a long, fluid motion, and then wipe the excess paint off the squeegee.
Tip: No squeegee? No problem! Try using an old gift card or ruler to get a similar effect.
Leave the paintings to dry.
How to Make Love Bird Collage Art
Step 1: Download the Love Bird templates.
While your painted paper dries, download the free printable love bird templates.
Step 2: Cut out the bird shapes.
The multi-bird template includes four unique bird designs, each featuring simple shapes, layered feathers, and sweet heart accents.
Cut them out as a small group to ensure all the pieces stay organized and easy to assemble.
Step 3: Trace the bird pieces onto painted paper.
The fun part! Trace each bird element onto various sections of your painted or patterned surface. Experiment with different colors and textures to add depth and visual interest.
To create a pair of ‘love birds,’ simply trace the elements in opposite directions to form a mirrored design.
Step 4: Assemble the love bird.
Start assembling the birds by gluing their bodies, wings, and decorative elements together. Use a glue stick to carefully attach each piece, making sure they’re securely in place.
Play around with positioning to give each bird its own personality. You can tilt the wings for a flying effect or layer different patterns for a more dynamic look.
Step 5: Decorate the birds.
Bring your love birds to life by adding details with acrylic or marker pens. Draw feathers, patterns, and tiny hearts to give them character.
The lines can be as simple as dashed strokes made with a pen, dots, or small curves.
This is where kids can play with patterns and shapes to make each bird design their own.
Step 6: Create a collage.
Grab a sheet of black card stock and start arranging your love birds. Once you’re happy with the layout, glue them down.
Let kids play with spacing, overlapping, and positioning to create a composition they love.
Kids can also add extra hearts, musical notes (as birds love to sing!), or even a little branch for the birds to perch on.
