The Geometric Watercolor Heart Art project is a fun and engaging way for kids to learn how to use watercolor paints.
The project includes geometric heart templates that children can use to simply color and explore painting with watercolors, or they have the option to use a heart outline to design their very own and unique heart canvas.
The templates offer the perfect opportunity for children to explore different applications of watercolor paints, such as diluting and spreading colors, blending, and more…

Watercolor Painting Techniques to Explore:
Watercolors offer a myriad of fun and exciting techniques for kids to try, each creating their own unique effect – adding a sense of wonder to creative process!
- Wet-on-dry technique: Dip the paintbrush into water and then into the desired color. Apply the wet brush to the dry paper, allowing for precise strokes and defined edges.
- Wet-on-wet technique: Wet the paper with clean water using a brush. Apply watercolor paint to the wet surface, allowing the colors to blend and flow seamlessly. This technique is great for creating soft gradients and dreamy effects.
- Salt texture technique: Apply watercolors to the paper. While the paint is still wet, sprinkle salt over the surface. The salt will absorb the water and create a unique speckled texture.
- Plastic wrap technique: Crumple up a piece of plastic wrap and place it on top of the wet paint. Leave it there until the paint dries, then remove the plastic wrap to reveal a textured effect.

Written Step-by-Step Watercolor Heart Art Painting Tutorial
Step 1: Print the Heart Art Templates.
Print the templates onto white card stock or mixed media paper. Be sure to check the printer settings before hitting the print button!
Step 2: Draw a design within the blank heart outline.
Children have the option to create a stained-glass effect with geometric shapes or draw a completely unique design of their choosing.
Either way, draw the pattern with a black crayon or oil pastel.
Geometric Heart Design
Segment the Heart:
Using a ruler, help the children divide the heart shape into smaller sections or segments by drawing straight lines across it. These lines will serve as guides for placing the triangles.
Draw Triangles:
Within each segmented section, ask the children to draw triangles using the ruler and crayons. They can vary the size and orientation of the triangles to add visual interest.
Abstract Heart Design
Arty Crafty Kids can fill the hearts with shapes of their choosing. We’ve drawn a collection of over-lapping hearts within a heart to emphasize the Valentine’s Day theme.
Step 3: Color the first heart segment.
Dampen the brush with water and blend it with a color of your choice.
Increase the amount of water for a lighter tint of the selected color or decrease it for a deeper hue.
Try using the heart canvas to explore the different watercolor painting techniques.
To achieve the wet-on-wet effect, dampen one of the segments with a brush dipped in water, then apply one or two watercolor colors to the moist surface. The crayon will resist the water, confining the paint within the segment, thus facilitating blending.
Continue playing with the techniques to create different watercolor effects within the heart.
Experiment with various colors of the rainbow or opt for different shades of a single color to achieve a tonal effect.
Step 4: Add texture with splatter painting!
Dampen both the paint and paintbrush, and use another paintbrush to gently tap it. The watery paint will spread splats around the white space of the heart.
The Geometric Watercolor Heart Art project is complete! I hope your Arty Crafty Kids love making this art idea their own.
