Creating Chalk Pastel Polar Bear Art Step-by-Step
Step 1: Prepare the canvas.
Begin by placing masking tape around all four edges of a black cardstock piece to create a clean border.
Then, add a single strip of tape near the bottom—this will define the horizon, separating the mountains and auroras from the reflective waters below.
Next, use a white chalk pastel to draw a bold line along the lower edge of the masking tape strip, creating a strong foundation for the horizon.
Step 2: Add blue chalk to create the reflective water.
Using shades of blue chalk pastels, begin filling the black space below the horizon line. Start with darker blues near the horizon and gradually blend into lighter shades as you move downward, creating a sense of depth and reflection.
Use your fingers or a blending tool to smooth out the colors, mimicking the soft, rippling effect of water
Step 3: Rip a strip of white paper to form a jagged edge.
Tear a horizontal strip from the top of a sheet of paper.
Step 4: Color the jagged edge.
Use chalk pastels to add color along the jagged edge of the white paper.
Consider the colors of the Northern Lights and aim to create a similar pattern in your design.
Position the torn paper on the black cardstock, then use your finger to gently blend the chalk onto the background.
Step 5: Remove the white paper.
You should now have a stunning display of chalk-drawn rays that beautifully mimic the Northern Lights.
Draw multiple rays across the black sky to add depth and brightness.
Step 6: Let’s create the mountains.
Carefully cut along one of the mountain lines from the template, aiming for smooth, clean edges—unlike the jagged shapes of the Northern Lights.
Step 7: Color the mountain edge blue.
Apply a generous layer of blue chalk pastel along the edges of the cut mountain shape.
Using your finger, gently blend the chalk downward in smooth strokes to create the illusion of a snow-dusted mountain peak.
Add more mountains to the scene by layering different shades of blue, creating depth and contrast within the landscape.
Once you’re happy with the arrangement, carefully remove the masking strip to reveal the clean horizon line.
Step 8: Affix the family of polar bears!
Now it’s time to bring the scene to life! Arrange the cut-out polar bears onto the landscape, positioning them on the reflective water or near the base of the mountains for a cozy, family feel.
Once you’re happy with their placement, you can use glue to put them in place.
The Northern Lights and Polar Bear art project is complete! With its glowing auroras, snow-capped mountains, and shimmering reflections, this piece beautifully captures the magic of the Arctic.
It’s a wonderful and simple way to experiment with chalk pastels while creating something unique. Whether you display it at home or gift it to someone special, it’s sure to bring a little wintery charm.
