How to Create a Blow Painting with Straws:
To get started, print the monster templates onto white card stock or mixed media paper. This monster art project uses water based paint and food coloring, and if ordinary paper is used, Arty Crafty Kids will be left with a soggy mess!
Add Colorful Blobs of Watercolor Paint to the Monster Template
To begin the monster easy art project for kids, choose a painting medium – this could be watercolor paint, ink or food coloring mixed with water. It’s important to use a water based paint or coloring as anything denser will become difficult for children to blow and spread across the sheet of paper.
Once a painting medium has been chosen and prepared as shown above, dab the paint across a print out of one the monster templates.
Blow the Paint with a Straw Across the Monster Template
Next, hover a straw just above the blobs of paint and blow!
Start with a big puff and then move the straw with the paint as it spreads across the monster template.
Arty Crafty Kids can use the process as an opportunity to play with their breath:
– What happens to the paint if they give the straw a short sharp blow?
– What happens to the paint if they blow the paint with long slow breaths?
– What will happen if they move the straw in a zig-zaggy motion as they blow?
Experiment and play to see how each of the techniques changes the spread of the paint.
Continue Using the Straw to Blow the Paint
Continue using the straw to blow the paint across the template, filling the surrounding white space with amazing shapes, lines and color blends.
Arty Crafty Kids will notice that some lines will become almost translucent while others will darken as they mix with other colors.
If the paint begins to pool in any area of the monster painting, encourage Arty Crafty Kids to give these areas an extra big blow to spread the paint.
This is such an easy art project for children to play with; creating random shapes, new colors and experimenting with breath in their creativity.
Leave the Watercolor Paint to Dry
Once the Arty Crafty Kids have finished blow painting, leave the monster art to thoroughly dry. Another bonus of using water based paint and coloring is that it’s quick to dry, so Arty Crafty Kids shouldn’t have to wait too long before continuing with the next steps of their monster paintings.
Color in the Monster Templates
As the monster paintings dry, color in the template elements: Mix and Match Monster Eyes, Mouths and Special Extra’s.
Carefully cut out the monster elements.
Cut out the Monster Elements and Mix & Match to Complete the Monster
Art meets craft with the the next phase of the project. Choose a selection of elements and glue them to the blow painting to create a monster.
Turn Blow Art into a Monster
If your Arty Crafty Kids didn’t fancy using a monster template, no problem! The blow art can be created on a blank piece of card stock, with the monster forming the shape of the blown paint.
Simply add the monster elements to the painting.
Use the Monster Drawing Prompt to Learn How to Draw a Monster
Our printable Monster Template Bundle also includes a Monster Drawing Prompt to enable children to take their monster art to the next level!
Use the monster prompts as inspiration to draw the monster body shapes, eyes etc onto the paint splats. For best results, use a black marker pen.
The monster craft and art project is complete! I hope your children have the most amazing time creating their monsters and if you’re active on social media, please do share their creations and gives us a tag – we would love to see their monster art!
