Sheep Art & Craft Step-by-Step Tutorial:
Step 1: Prepare the canvas and draw the landscape.
Grab a full sheet of white card stock (or cut it in half) and use our flow drawing step-by-step guide to sketch a landscape.
Once the basic hill shapes are drawn, segment them with a few extra lines.
Step 2: Paint the landscape.
To achieve an abstract, ‘folksy-styled’ atmosphere in the landscape, paint the individual hill sections using different shades of green.
And amongst the green, add strips of yellow, orange, pink or red to the hills.
Paint the sky blue and the sun a mix of yellow and orange.
Once the landscape is colored in, leave it thoroughly dry and move onto the sheep craft template.
Step 3: Paint the sheep’s head and leg elements.
Paint the sheep’s head and leg elements black.
TIP: Younger children might find it easier to color in the sheep elements with crayons, pencils or marker pens.
Step 4: Decorate the sheep’s body.
Use a fine tipped marker pen to draw small swirls to create a ‘woolly’ texture within the sheep’s body.
Alternatively, children can opt to use a q-tip or a piece of bubble wrap to print white spots.
Step 5: Cut out the sheep elements from the template.
Step 6: Assemble the sheep.
Use a white acrylic pen to draw a smile onto the sheep’s head, then affix the eye and ear with glue.
Next, affix the head and legs onto the sheep’s body.
Step 7: Outline the hills within the landscape.
Use a black marker pen to define the individual hills and their segments within the landscape painting.
Step 8: Glue the sheep onto the landscape.
To complete the abstract sheep art, affix the sheep onto the hilly area of the landscape painting.
Abstract Sheep Art for Preschoolers and Younger Children
One of the best features of this sheep art project is its versatility – it really can be tailored to children of all ages!
For instance, rather than depicting a hilly landscape, preschoolers and younger children can paint a simple grassy ground for their sheep.
Moreover, children can experiment with different techniques such as finger painting, using q-tips, or pressing bubble wrap to create white spots on their sheep. Another engaging option is to enhance their sheep’s texture by gluing cotton wool onto its body, lending it a realistic and tactile 3D feel.
