Our Paper Roll Koala Craft is beyond cute and is amazingly easy to make; perfect for making with your Arty Crafty Kids!

Koala’s are an iconic Australian animal and are perfectly adapted to the woodland areas where lots of eucalyptus trees grow in eastern and southern Australia. So if your children are learning about Australia Day or animals from around the world, this is a fun and simple craft to blend with their studies.

Paper roll crafts are a fun and easy way to get your kids involved in arts and crafts, and our little Koala is a really cool craft to make with your preschoolers. It doesn’t require any special tools or supplies other than sheets of paper, a paper roll, glue and a few pom-pom’s.

We have even designed a printable Koala template to make the craft super easy!

  • Paper Roll
  • Gray, Pink, Brown, Green and Pink Paper
  • x5 Gray Pom-Poms
  • Scissors
  • Glue Stick
  • Pencil

Let’s Make a Koala!

Wrap the Paper Roll

Wrap the Paper Roll

Select a paper roll from the recycling bin.

Align the paper roll against a sheet of gray paper to measure its width and proceed to cut a long strip of paper – the strip should be long enough to wrap around the paper roll.

Trace the Koala Elements from the Template

Trace the Koala Elements from the Template

Cut out the elements from the koala template provided.

Using a pencil, trace the the koala’s ears onto dark gray paper, the head onto a lighter shade of gray paper and the inner ears onto pink paper.

Cut out all the traced elements.

Assemble the Koala's Head

Assemble the Koala’s Head

Affix the ears onto either side of the koala’s head.

Draw the Koala's Eyes and a Big Friendly Smile

Draw the Koala’s Eyes and a Big Friendly Smile

Affix a nose and pink cheeks, and complete the Koala’s face by drawing a pair of black eyes, lashes and a smile.

Glue the Koala's Tummy to the Paper Roll

Glue the Koala’s Tummy to the Paper Roll

Next, glue the oval tummy area directly onto the paper roll.

Affix the Koala's Head and Pom-Poms

Affix the Koala’s Head and Pom-Poms

Glue the Koala’s head to the top of the paper roll and begin to affix the pom-pom’s.

Affix Four Pom-Pom's at the Front of the Koala's Body

Affix Four Pom-Pom’s at the Front of the Koala’s Body

Affix 4 pom-pom’s to the front of the koala’s body; two at the top of the oval tummy and another two just below.

Complete the Paper Roll Koala Craft with a Final Pom-Pom on the Back

Complete the Paper Roll Koala Craft with a Final Pom-Pom on the Back

Turn the Koala around and complete the craft with a final pom-pom “tail” at the back.

Extend the Learning with Some Fun Koala Facts!

Koala’s are one of the most popular animals in Australia. They are also one of the most unique looking animals with their furry bodies and big noses. People often think that Koalas are bears, but they are actually marsupials. This means that they carry their young in a pouch like kangaroos.

  • Koalas are very shy animals and tend to live in eucalyptus trees.
  • Koalas are nocturnal creatures and spend most of their time sleeping, in fact, they sleep for up to 18 hours each day!
  • The average lifespan of a koala is around 13 years.
  • One of the most interesting facts about koalas is that they don’t drink water! They get all the moisture they need from the eucalyptus leaves they eat.
  • Baby koalas are called joeys.
